Spanish Fiestas, the Working Calendar and Contracts

Valencia had its week of fiestas last week called Fallas. Here in Spain we don’t really bother with a bank holiday on a Monday. If a fiesta is there to be enjoyed then it has to be for a much more extended time scale. Think about the upcoming Feria de Abril in Sevilla, last week’s Carnival in the Islas Canarias, the Magdalena in Castellon in the next couple of weeks and a whole host of other fiestas that exist in every small town, village and large city in the whole of Spain. They all span near to a whole week.

Working the Spanish Summer and Extremadura

Sometimes you just want to turn off but you cannot do it. Too much to do and too many possibilities in life.

Welcome to the Spanish Summer of work. The temperature is about to hit 40 degrees in certain parts of Spain today and it looks like being that way fro a while, about two months. Ever tried working in that temperature?

A few weeks ago I gave a presentation at the Turbo Charge Networking Event in Fuengirola. Here are the slides in their original format. Obviously without the commentary they make a little less ense. However if you go to the link at the end you can listen to the whole presentation and get a copy of all of the resources mentioned.

Neglect

I have been seriously neglecting this blog. There are many reasons but I am not going to go into excuses here, just to tell you I have been unfaithful. I am writing my best stuff on two other sites at the moment, http://www.blokesontheblog.co.uk and as a guest post author on http://www.birdsontheblog.co.uk. Therefore not much is coming on here that is new. Ally that to the summer and the ridiculous number of clients coming into http://www.Valencia-property.com then you can see that [...]

General Strike in Spain - Will People Follow

As an Entrepreneur in Spain I look at the general strike in Spain next week and wonder whether it will be successful and how success can be measured. The reasons for it apparently are to protest against the erosion of worker’s rights due to the onslaught of austerity measures imposed by the government. The catalyst for it was a 5% cut in wages for civil servants by the government for which the civil servants have already had a day of action, or inaction, and nobody really noticed.

How Not To Sell A Car

If you know somebody is travelling 130 miles to come and see one of the cars you have in your car showroom what do you do? Obviously the client, me in this case, is interested, you don’t travel 130 miles for no reason do you? So come on make a list.

How The Summer Holidays Change Things With Kids

As I write this I have a half naked 5 year old playing on the Wii nearby and another just getting up. My 18 year old is bringing her cases down for her holiday in Mallorca and the house is a total tip after a weekend of parties for the 4 year old’s birthday, and birthday party on Sunday.

Finishing Something That You Started

I don’t like to leave things unfinished. Do you? Therefore when I suggested to myself that it might be a good idea to produce a lot of videos very quickly it seemed like an interesting challenge. However I know myself intimately after so many years in my company and I knew if I didn’t put a huge hole in the project very quickly and get the whole World as accountability partners making sure I followed through on the project that it might fizzle out a bit.

Why Work In Spain Must Change

I thought I would start this little article on work in Spain by telling you a few salient facts about Spain;

1) Unemployment currently stands at 22.9%

2) To set up your own business costs an initial monthly cost of at least 450 Euros with an on-going monthly cost of 350 Euros, even if you do not require office space or a place of work.

3) If you are self-employed, you do not qualify for any unemployment benefit if things don’t work out.

How Do You Become The Google Of Your Market?

Living in Spain is rather strange at times. I have said before in these pages that Spanish life is rather conformist, what one person does successfully everybody else follows in general. Successful estate agents beget copycat models, and the same can be said of academies, theme bars, delicatessens and a huge etcetera. Google is the absolute killer in this area though because people started to use it and everybody else followed. Loads copied but none got traction. In fact just like in English there is a phrase which says “Look for it in Google”, ie Google it.
