Spanish Fiestas, the Working Calendar and Contracts

Valencia had its week of fiestas last week called Fallas. Here in Spain we don’t really bother with a bank holiday on a Monday. If a fiesta is there to be enjoyed then it has to be for a much more extended time scale. Think about the upcoming Feria de Abril in Sevilla, last week’s Carnival in the Islas Canarias, the Magdalena in Castellon in the next couple of weeks and a whole host of other fiestas that exist in every small town, village and large city in the whole of Spain. They all span near to a whole week.

The Worst Idea Of All Time - How Telefonica Doesn't Get It

Telefonica has been voted on my blog as the worst company in the World. Their latest idea may well be the worst they have ever had. Before telling you about it though you need to know a bit of background. Telefonica is the ex state monopoly telephone supplier in Spain. To all intents and purposes it still is as it is the only option in most of the country if you want a telephone line.

So What's Entrepreneur Solo?

“Being an entrepreneur in Spain is like being a snowboarder in Jamaica”.

It may be an exaggeration but Spain is a country where more than most people define themselves by what they do and what they want to do rather than who they are. Ambition is measured by wanting to be a civil servant because you cannot be sacked. I am sorry but it doesn’t float my boat.

So who am I and why am I an entrepreneur? From a young age I realised that I didn’t want to work for anyone else. I prefer working for a slave driver; Me. I set my own goals and start up my own businesses because I don’t like being told what to do by people that usually I consider to not have a clue.

Spanish Business Culture... Just Behind Mongolia

The World Bank has come out with a rather shocking picture of what it is like trying to operate a business in Spain. As explained in the video below, Spain ranks 62nd in the World for ease of conducting business, that is just behind World powerhouse economies like Mongolia and Tonga.

Working the Spanish Summer and Extremadura

Sometimes you just want to turn off but you cannot do it. Too much to do and too many possibilities in life.

Welcome to the Spanish Summer of work. The temperature is about to hit 40 degrees in certain parts of Spain today and it looks like being that way fro a while, about two months. Ever tried working in that temperature?

The Dynamism of the Spanish Entrepreneur

I don’t want this blog to come on as being a complaints litany or anything so I will get this out of the way right now, this is total stereotyping and probably not the case. (OK now I can hammer Spanish Entrepreneurs.)

A Short Post About Productivity

Are you productive in what you do daily? Do you use your downtime in a productive way? I only ask because I wrote a blog post yesterday on my Mac as I arrived 20 minutes early for an appointment a previous appointment didn’t take as long as I thought it would.

Positioning and Establishing Yourself in a New Market

One of the questions I get asked regularly is how you establish yourself in a new market. Well I have a very simple answer to that, the first thing you must do is to put out content and lots of it and get people who are already prominent in the market noticing you for what you say.

Let me give you an example. I am currently building up my position in the World of SEO in Spain to a certain level. I started by having a speaking gig at a University which allowed me to present a few things about SEO and social media.

Opportunity Cost For Entrepreneurs

When you are an entrepreneur you see opportunities at every turn. This week for example I have had ideas of at least four possibilities for putting together a business. So what I want to talk about today is opportunity cost Opportunity cost is one of the biggest, most important things that you should take into account when starting a new project because you can use so much time doing a project that really hasn’t got the potential to make itself [...]
