I think it definitely strikes at the social fabric Peter but think you would agree that young Spaniards are very well prepared for work but don't get the opportunities here.

You forgot Sangría and Sex Jonathan ;-) I agree that politicians are not up to the job. Rajoy isn't and ZP wasn't. The fact that Camps was found innocent is ridiculous and would never have happened in any other European country. It is patently ridiculous that Garzón is in the dock.

Thanks for the comment John. I don't know if unemployment would half but I am pretty sure a huge hole would be made in it if that happened

Spain still has en enormous amount of wealth stacked up and spread out amongst and with families and the corrupt law makers, politicians, businesses etc. If all the taxes are accounted for and picked up with a no fiddle system in every sector then 30% of the GDP is available to reinvest in the manufacturing industries that Spain so badly lacks, will certainly help with unemployment and the use of the vast and readily available natural resources together with technology and resources/venture capital made available to the young to start their own business. Spain will ride out this bumpy ride as it moved on from the days of Franco.

Very true Lisa. Take a look at this post by Justin Aldridge on his blog. One of the comments there is saying something about making it easier to run a business. Right on the button. http://www.eyeonspain.com/blogs/justin/6627/spains-jobless-passes-five-million-what-next.aspx

A very simple change that could result in a major change in the employment sector would be to reduce the cost of the social security payment that autonomos have to pay.
So many people are working "illegally" as the autonomo costs are so high. A reduction in these payments would encourage so many more people to set up new businesses which could only be a positive thing.

"BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR IN SPAIN IS LIKE BEING A SNOWBOARDER IN JAMAICA"

In fairness to the Spanish, they are not unique. Having "evacuated" Ireland 3 years ago to come here, I recognise a lot of things here that are carried out in Ireland.
The building boom and bust and also the scandalous banking debacles.

I feel that the last government concentrated hard of workers rights to the point that workers with jobs are in a great position.
Business owners are not interested in hiring new staff because of the very strong rights these employees will have.

Coupled with the crippling high Social Security payments for self-employed (Autonimo).
At almost €300 per month BEFORE you even make a penny...???

In other countries (Ireland included) social security is a percentage of earnings.

In Spain if you earn €500 a month, then your tax bill is 60-70% of earnings.
Thats just plain crazy.

Every carpenter, plumper, bricklayer, painter etc etc is collecting the Paro (Dole) AND doing black market work at the same time.

How many would prefer to pay, say, 8-10% Social Security just to be covered medically and would then declare their earnings through the books?

I would hazard a guess that the 23% unemployment would half overnight.

I'm very hopeful that Spain will turn it around. I know there will more pain in the next few years but it does have the ingredients for a great cake.
