(Karl Rohde is a New Zealander planning on moving to Spain very soon. Here in the econd of his articles about the process he looks at the costings involved)
If you are from Europe, Spain is close by. Any specifics you need done or found out can be part of a brief holiday. From New Zealand, things get much more complicated, and I have been discovering this time and again.
Our biggest hurdle to date in our planning had been determining how much money we will actually need. As a freelancer, juggling money is second nature, and if I need more money, I can usually put together some venture or other over time to inject some cash.
But when you compare the New Zealand dollar to the Euro, you get a little bit of a shock. The median income in New Zealand is around 28,000 New Zealand dollars, or about 14,000 Euro. The average salary is around 50,000 New Zealand dollars.
It didn’t really look all that different than Spain, and once I looked at the cost of living, the income required for both countries seemed about the same.
So, based on that I figured I would need about 50,000 Euro to provide us enough funding to get establish in our first 12 months.
In my last post, you may recall I touched on constantly changing information. Well, this is no exception. After working on all my budgets, I finally got an email back from the Embassy in Australia, several months after I sent it mind you!
Essentially it said the minimum to be allowed to come to Spain was 100,000 Euros, and it had to be kept in an Escrow account for 24 months. This obviously took me by surprise. Having to save 100,000 New Zealand dollars in the time frame we had given ourselves was achievable, but three times that amount was out of the question!
Getting past this little hurdle took a little effort, and I’ll go over some of the current “facts” in my next post.
