I was talking to a friend at a business networking lunch on Friday (Yes I know I should only talk to those I don’t know but it doesn’t sit right) I was told that this person is currently undergoing a bit of an existential crisis brought on by age and odious comparisons.

Odious Comparisons

Odious Comparisons

It turns out that the person in question is coming out of a few failed ventures and is starting another one up at the moment, not one destined to fail of course but a new venture ;-) . They were getting depressed and down on themselves because of the comparison with family and friends who have “Made much more of their business lives than I have”. It is difficult to help someone who is on a major downer on themselves straight off but i was thinking later and this may help

Who lives on the Mediterranean Coastline?
Who has a fantastic family with children that are totally bilingual and killing their exams?
Who owns various properties around the city and environs that bring in a decent cashflow?
Who can work on what they choose to work on rather than depending on “the man”.

We can all get down on ourselves at time and being an entrepreneur solo can be amazingly difficult. That is why it is always interesting to go to these networking lunches and chill out a while. The mixture of blind youthful enthusiasm and know it all experience allied to an atmosphere of conviviality and mutual help makes for a great place to shoot the breeze for a time. And lastly, I got a potential contract out of the meeting yesterday, all I have to do now is follow through. Do you follow through? And I was able to help somebody who was blocked or ideas of something to do, I like that. Over the next few months I expect to be giving business to at least three of the people I spoke to there. How can you help out someone else at your next business lunch?

  2. Hi Graham,

Funny about what you say about following through. As you know we’re currently on planning on buying something out of Barcelona.

It stuns us how poor the follow up from estate agents is here. Most of them don’t bother, even though we’ve told them exactly what we’re looking for and they’ve told us they have dozens of properties they can’t sell.

Is it that when times were good for estate agents they sold properties so easily that they don’t have any basic sales skills? Or have they simply given up hope?

Surely it isn’t that difficult to contact a potential client who has finance and showing all the classic ‘buy’ signals.

  3. David, most agents here wouldn’t recognise a buy signal if it came up smacked them around the face shouting “I’m a buy signal, I’m a buy signal”
Life was too easy for all of them during the boom years so they never actually got any sales training. Read the post on the Reservoir Dogs look and there you have it.
