I talk a good game.
But sometimes I don’t follow through usually because of lack of focus.
I was taught a lesson and humbled into action last weekend by my daughter. Now recently turned 18 I have taught her about buying domains and selling websites. I have bought her Market Samurai as anyone who is serious about internet marketing really should do but the truth is I didn’t really buy her it because Market Samurai comes with two licences when you buy it so you can give it to your outsourcer or in this case my daughter.
So a couple of months ago we did some investigation of domains together using Domainface within Market Samurai and I bought her a domain. PR3, seven years old and told her to do her worst. She had been studying what is now known as “The Challenge” and previously the 30 Day Challenge and she used the 2009 methods with a couple of things added in, i.e, the aged domain and some tips from me. She did all this whilst revising for her “A” levels (So don’t tell me you don’t have time) and she was doing five “A” levels. Eight unique articles later and some basic backlinking to cement the PR she put the site up for sale on Flippa and realised $325 for it. A nice $295 dollar profit from an original investment of $30, or rather an almost 1000% profit in just under three months.
What has she learnt? Well there is a way through University without getting into huge amounts of debt. And she can beat her old man at stuff. Oh and by putting up her site she has been offered a job working for a jewellery shop in Valencia on their video marketing, so get it out there.
Now what is the lesson or lessons for me?
I have around 100 domains sitting around, some with sites on and others that haven’t got sites at all, some ignored and some worked on constantly. I bought a great domain in February but because I have messed around and not put a site on it my original fantastic business idea for it had been mostly forgotten.
I was shamed into actually putting a site up last Friday evening when she was buying her next domain with the proceeds from the first and starting up her second site. We actually had a bit of a race to get a site up. Hers can be seen here www.artisan-roofing.com (And no this is not the same strategy, this one is for selling to a company actually doing artisan roofing). Mine is www.spain-dining.com which is my forgotten project from February of course. It was previously Pr2 and I will get that back by putting a site on I think in the next Google update.
My site was ready quicker, just over an hour or three Pomodoros but hers might get a return first because the strategy is different. Her strategy is to sell the site to a company offering artisan roofing services once she has it ranking. Mine is a long term restaurant listing, income producer.
Now what should you take from this. Firstly, anything you hear about the fact that making money online is easy is wrong. She did put about three hours work into it over the almost three months! Knowing the right strategies helps enormously. If you want to know the right strategies then read the related reading below and do The Challenge. It has already started for this year but you can catch up.
Meanwhile as I said, I talk a good game. Telling people what I have told my daughter has meant I have picked up a couple of consultancy jobs for website development and social media consulting for local businesses which just goes to prove that there is certainly more than one way to skin any particular cat and while looking at her listing on Flippa I found another site that had earnt quite a bit of money over a six month period and have taken the concept and started running with it. I earned my first €100 with it today on the second day. Did I mention that I was previously leaving money on the table? Are your eyes open to these things too?
What are you going to be humbled into doing?
