Whilst in the UK, TV watching has gone up back above the four hours per day level, (please people get a life), here in Spain the balance has shifted so that now the time spent in front of the computer is now greater than the time spent in front of the TV. Spanish people are down to 2-2.5 Hours per day of TV which most sane people would still insist is probably 2 hours per day too much as the quality of it sucks.

I find that now the TV is no longer the background music to my life because the huge range of choices available to us these days means that my own background music has gone back to being radio or music in the background as I spend my time on the Mac.

If I want to dip into TV, I can on demand and through streaming. The same can be said of most of the people I know. The older generation still probably buy a copy of both the Radio and TV Times at Christmas in the UK and mark off what films they are going to watch and when they are on. Obviously services like Sky anytime, Love Film and Netflix allow us to consume films whenever we want and bandwidth getting higher allows us to find streamed sporting events from around the World live as they happen.

The major diference is where the balance of power lies. The traditional broadcasters are losing advertising revenue as their ratings go lower. Also services like the TiVo or Sky Hard Drives mean that many people skip the adverts totally so the advertisers need to create more buzz in the social media World to drive people towards their products. The major broadcasters need to find a newer and better revenue model as the they cannot hope to fight the tide they are currently battling against.

This is of course reflected online. If you create interesting content and SEO your page to the nth degree then you have a great chance to get those eyeballs on your website, video or their ears on your Podcast. How do you capture those visitors though?

For small businesses obviously TV advertising has never been on the radar due to cost issues. TV now comes back onto that radar as the segmentation of the TV market into smaller niche channels as opposed to major broadcasters means you can actually tap into your niche market a lot easier these days. As this article and video from Slate shows, it is now possible to make and broadcast your own TV advert very cheaply, at least in the States. However there are many other means of getting to market. And that is the point?

What is your means of getting your message to market? Does TV play a role for you or might it do in the future? Or will it forever more be redundant for you?
