I’m back. It’s been a while, and despite all good intentions to write a post every Sunday, the last month or so has been a mess of scheduling issues.
The biggest has been finding a new place to live and organizing all the people who need to be organized. Cleaners, movers, inspections with property managers and the list goes on.
Combined that with pressures from clients, and by the time I have decided to sit down and write something, there is very little energy left!
However, as was pointed out to me recently, the house move has actually proven to be good practice for getting to Spain. I contacted not less than thirty service people, from carpet cleaners, movers, packing box sellers and even a specialist oven cleaner company or two.
Of those thirty or so, about 5-6 actually bothered to get back to me. The only company that was actually prompt was the jumbo bin company. They got back almost immediately.
Now this was frustrating. My blood pressure went up, the anxiety factor went up. After all, didn’t they know the moving date was fast approaching, and that I had so much to organize?
I’m sure what has actually happened is my friends in Spain are actually monitoring all my Internet activity, and they are sending emails to these places to say, “Hey, Karl need’s to learn to deal with Spanish culture. Don’t bother getting back to him until the very last minute!”
That would not surprise me at all
However it raises a point often put to me by people who live in Spain that life is often at a different pace than in somewhere like New Zealand. We have a saying in New Zealand called “Island Time” for the time management approach often associated with Pacific Islanders. To put this into context, in Fiji, the current junta actually deferred a military coup to watch a local rugby game.
Perhaps this little house moving exercise was the universe say “Slow down Karl, you’ll be in Spain soon enough!”.
