Last week I wrote an article about hitting your targets focussed on the online markets. Today it is the turn of offline and again the process is similar with the same mantra, “if you don’t know where you are heading then it doesn’t matter which way you set out”.

However there is one huge difference. offline things can cost you a lot of money if you don’t have a plan in place and a way to get there. Nevertheless there is one commonality, targets need to be chunked down into their constituent parts before you start.

Offline goals are more tangible than visitor numbers, bounce rates, click through rates and more.

So let’s say that your goal is to get your business up and running and making money… err no. If there is one thing that I have learnt about goals it is that they should be measurable in time, method and money. In business the last part is the most important metric. In your life your goals may not involve money at all but the time and method are important. SMART goals are supposed to be specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. However, I totally disagree about the realistic part. If you are not ambitious about what you are doing in life and business then you might get there and just think, “Pah, is that it?”

By setting a more ambitious goal though you may be disappointed by not reaching it quickly or even totally discouraged by the plethora of options facing you on which direction to go to start off. You need to make the goal into small pieces of course. This chunking will give you smaller achievable steps on the road to the bigger hairy audacious goal you really want to achieve.

The most important thing of all of course is that your goals should be written down. Get them written down and you will find that you actually start thinking about how to achieve them. If you just think it you will find that tomorrow you haven’t a clue what it was that you wanted to do.

So what do you want to do in life? And what are your written goals to get there?
