This morning I spent a lot of time editing four videos. Videos are a great way of getting your message out about something because more and more people are doing their searches in YouTube rather than through Google and because people’s attention span is often longer when the visual stimuli is interesting so not only the original video but also the editing is important.
To do this you do not need expensive equipment but there is one thing that is really a huge necessity if you don’t want to be wasting your time and that is a Mac. A Mac and Video were born for each other. iMovie comes packaged on all Macs and with the usage of screenflow too to help show what is actually happening on your screen then you have it all. For recording a basic HD video camera like the Kodak Zi8 and a cheap microphone are enough.
For example, if you record a carcast, as I often do, then it is just as important to insert some photos of what you are talking about so that it is not just a talking head for too long. If you are recording another video of yourself then make sure the background is interesting. This can be done by actually being in an interesting place as in the video below, or using a green screen effect and a photo, however you need to iron your green screen better than I generally do.
Video editing can take a lot of time because you can make everything better all the time, there is no finished product. You have to draw the line somewhere. A two minute video can easily take a couple of hours to edit and make almost perfect. However the couple of minutes can change your business totally. For me it has changed things totally.
I have even started to make videos for others and with my two business partners we are now offering video marketing services and the setting up of YouTube channels and video SEO so that small and medium sized businesses can promote their brand online. Once we start making a lot of them I might even iron my green screen a bit more.
And this morning I worked on editing videos for five hours by the way but four videos was the outcome which is quite a good result.
