One of my mentors constantly insists, “You cannot manage what you don’t measure” Therefore he insists I measure everything of course and then split test different things to see if they are working or not. If they do then I get to do more of it even if I don’t like it, and if it isn’t then I get to leave it and try something else.

By doing this at the start of a process you need to know what a win means to you. You need a target or goal to aim for. As the saying goes when you ask which way you should go but you have no definite destination then it doesn’t really matter which direction you start out in.

So anyway, one of the things that is constantly imprinted on my mind is the reading of my posts on any of my blogs and using analytics to study what is working and what isn’t. Now when I speak to people about analytics and more especially Google analytics they often start to glaze over. Analytics though gives you a very precise idea of whether you are winning and how big that win is.

However I am not going to talk about anaytics here and why and how. What I am going to do is tell you about a plugin to my blog which helps me track exactly where visits have come from and how many clicks I am getting to the links I put up and that is Pretty Link. If you haven’t heard of it then good. This will be good news for you. If you have a website and want to see if visitors are coming from a particular site to yours then just put the link up using a pretty link. Equally if you want to send people to a particular page or site, for example an affiliate product then use a Pretty link. Why is it called a Pretty Link? Because it makes the link look nice.

For example if you use one of my other blogs as an example and you want to go to the Facebook page then that Facebook page has a hideous url. However I can create a link like this www.houses-for-sale-in-spain.net/facebook and point it to the real address and track who follows. It is important because you can work out return on investment and time amongst other things along with how your links are working. Pretty Link gives you the details of how many visitors went there and how many uniqe visitors which is good to know if one person just keeps revisiting because they love you so much.
