Social Media isn’t a race or a competition but lots of people love to see their number of followers on Twitter, friends in Facebook, contacts in MySpace (MySpace still exists right?) going up and up and up. Why?
I have recently left Ecademy as a paying member because of the new emphasis being put on numbers rather than the quality of the contacts. I did my Twitter cull about a month and a half ago and now only follow people I find interesting. If I want news and opinions from a particular field then I use the hashtag method of following a subject rather than people and if somebody is particularly interesting I will then follow them. I have always been quite careful about friends on Facebook because truthfully I didn’t get it and sometimes it still looks all Greek to me despite my love of social networks.
So what is the reason for putting my Twitter Counter at the top right here. Well simply put if you want to follow me there you will find I tweet whenever I put up more content on here which means it is another method for people to follow the blog apart from signing up to the RSS feed or the soon to be appearing newsletter.
However I would love to see my followers grow on Twitter but only with those interested in what I am doing and who can provide something interesting for me to follow too. If you are simply trying to sell me “get rich on Twitter” courses forget it because it will not happen, i.e I will not follow you.
Tell me in the comments why you should be followed and then maybe we can connect. Life should be about quality not quantity and remember that when you are thinking of joining any social network. Following 20000 people who you don’t know from Adam has about as much point as counting the grains of sand on Valencia beach. It’s all about engagement and how can you hope to directly engage more than a couple of hundred people at a time. it has even been suggested that 100 is the maximum. What do you think?

I agree fully
A recent article actually said that 150 ppl was the max amount to be able to actively engage with
The Russian word for city means 100 people doesn’t it?
Nice to meet you this morning Piet

I can`t agree completely.

You are right, quality is much more important than quantity; and there are only a few people which are able to spend me real “informational” benefit. However, for example in Facebook you are able to put your friends in different categories and then you can share different informations with these different categories.
And maybe one person of the category “Unimportant people” becomes one day important for you and then he is already your friend.
(I hope my explanation was understandable, because my mother-tongue is German

Good point Markus and well put. People move in and out of your life at different stages. I prefer the quality side.
