I have been developing a lot of websites recently and it is actually embarrassingly easy to rank websites for certain keywords in Spain. With a little thought and a small amount of backlinking you can be on the first page of Google.es within a few hours at times. Why is this though? Why doesn’t Spain get websites?

Well there are two reasons as far as I can see. The first is a minor one and the second is a lot more major. Firstly if you ask the average person in the street how much a website costs to make in Spain the usual answer is around 2-3000 Euros. And why is it around 2-3000 Euros? Simply because that is how much website design companies have been charging for years to develop sites in the second problem.

Flash! Website design companies in Spain are still obsessed by Flash. Flash doesn’t rank and Google cannot find it. Loads of companies have expensive, great looking websites that nobody has ever visited because they can never be found. I have a friend who knows of a company that asked him about their website and he was quite surprised that a three year old website was actually not even registered in Google. Why? Oh it was made in Flash of course.

So anyway if you are quoted 3000 Euros for a website in Spain just remember a few things.
1) SEO is not included.
2) It will definitely be constructed in Flash.
3) You will not be able to claim anything back off the company that has ripped you off.

If you want some serious website work done firstly you need a report done on which keywords you should be targetting. (You can do this yourself of course using the magnificent Market Samurai.) Then you need to actually plan the website into its categories. After that it is easy. WordPress is your friend and with the latest update to WordPress 3.0 it is getting even easier.
